And the "Plan" Crumbles...

As most of you know, I applied to BYUI for the fall 2011 semester so I could get my degree in Elementary Education. Before you all scream, "Education?! Are you NUTS?!" it's the best career for my family right now. I can be home with the kids all summer and not have to pay out the nose for a baby-sitter during those months. Add in the fact I can boss around 25 kids every day and have weekends off, it seems like a good fit.

However, all that is a moot point.

I received a very formal letter on Tuesday from BYUI informing me they "regretted to inform me I couldn't be admitted at this time." Why? Very simple--decisions I made 14 years ago as a nineteen year old, that's why. Let's go back to the fall of 1995, shall we?

I was fresh out of high school, with as many dreams as I had zits on my face. I'd been accepted to ISU along with most of my friends. My head was full of important images of me attending classes, walking through campus, making new friends, and indulging in everything adults do. Well, I walked through campus, made new friends, but in my sophomore year I decided going to class wasn't all that great. I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up, so going to class seemed like a waste of time. Besides, they interfered with the afternoon episodes of "MacGyver", lunch with friends and midnight movie matinees.

When ISU politely asked me to leave on academic dismissal, I wasn't discouraged. I was going to be a travel agent! It's what I loved (still do) and was good at. I went to a travel school, graduated with flying colors and then went off to work in Seattle. After a few years the Internet was quickly making travel agents obsolete, so I was left at a dead end. Then my next major mistake was made---I met my future husband and thought I didn't need to work anymore!

Fast forward fourteen years and I'm a single mom with useless skills, a GPA not high enough to be accepted into BYUI, and rather embarrassed by my teenage naivety. The only thing I don't regret is the "single" part.

My choices?
1. I can go back to ISU. (Not really a choice at all.)
2. I can attend BYUI as a continuing ed or part-time student until my GPA is pulled up to an acceptable number, and then re-apply for full-time status.

Now, what is the lesson not only I, but we all should learn? The decisions you make today truly DO affect what happens tomorrow....or in fourteen years.

At nineteen, I thought I knew everything.

At thirty-three, the only thing I know for sure is that I don't know anything.

Hey - going to school part time seems ideal. You can work a little, study while your kids are at school, still go to their school stuff. . . Might be the way to go! Sometimes it's surprising how things end up working out. . . Trust me on this one! :)

I agree with my two favorite aunts! Things always have a way of working out. You are a tough lady! This is only a hiccup in what will be the greatest years of your life!

A very good lesson! One that I will most definitely apply to my own life. I did go to college but my degree, (family science) although wonderful for a homemaker is useless in the real world. I know how resourceful and awesome you are and I know that you'll think of a way to make this work. It's one of those tests that you will not only pass with flying colors but will use to make you and your children stronger. Love you and miss you tons!

Weren't we all so smart at 19?? I look at those pics of you and I see a beautiful woman who has grown into her own and looks like she's going to go out and make the most of her life! Whatever you choose, I'm sure it will be the right thing for your family and you will be blessed for your choices! good luck!
